What root canal treatment addresses

Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected pulp from inside a tooth. The canals are cleaned and sealed, and the tooth then needs an appropriate restoration. Its purpose is to retain a tooth when this approach is suitable. Pain on biting, lingering sensitivity or swelling can prompt an evaluation, but symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis.

Questions about keeping the tooth

Understand the findings

Ask what the examination and any indicated imaging show.

Compare the options

Ask whether the tooth is restorable and what alternatives are reasonable.

Plan the whole course

Discuss treatment, final restoration and follow-up together.

Tell the dentist about previous treatment on this tooth. Ask whether the proposed care can be completed at the office or whether specialist referral is appropriate. This page does not represent the clinic as an endodontic specialty practice.

The restoration matters too

After root canal treatment, a filling or crown protects and restores the tooth according to its condition. Follow instructions about chewing and complete the recommended restoration. Read our dental crown guide for questions about material, fit and appearance.

Sungshim Dental has an in-house lab and digital scanning for restorative planning. Ask how those resources would be used for your tooth and how the restorative visits fit with the root canal plan.

Comfort, visits and the estimate

Discuss anesthesia, expected discomfort, your medical history and any dental anxiety before care. Confirm the likely number of visits for your case; this guide does not promise painless treatment or completion in one visit.

Ask for an estimate that identifies the examination, imaging, root canal treatment and final restoration separately. Clarify whether additional visits or referral would change the estimate and which insurance details the office needs.

After treatment and when to call

Ask for written instructions, the expected recovery course and the follow-up date. Contact the dental team about worsening pain, swelling, a loose temporary restoration or a bite that feels wrong. For an acute problem, read our urgent dental care guide.

If a tooth cannot reasonably be retained, ask about the alternatives and their tradeoffs. Our implant guide explains one replacement option; an implant is not the automatic next step for every painful tooth.

Questions patients ask

Will I need a crown afterward?

The final restoration depends on the remaining tooth and clinical findings. Ask what restoration is recommended and when it should be completed.

Can a previously treated tooth be evaluated?

Tell the office about the previous root canal and any new symptoms. Bring records if available and ask whether specialist evaluation is needed.

Can I discuss treatment in Korean?

Yes. Sungshim Dental provides consultations in English and Korean at its Kalihi, Honolulu office.

Tooth-pain evaluation with Dr. Park and Dr. Kim

Dr. Chan Hee Park and Dr. Jisu Kim evaluate general dental concerns at Sungshim Dental, including tooth pain. Tell the office when symptoms began and what makes them better or worse. An examination is needed to decide whether root canal treatment, another dental option or urgent medical care is appropriate, and what restoration may be needed afterward.
