Plan for a tooth that looks right and works comfortably.

A crown may be recommended when a tooth needs more coverage or support than a smaller restoration can provide. At Sungshim Dental in Honolulu, discuss why a crown is being proposed, what alternatives are reasonable and how the final tooth will be planned.

A crown recommendation starts with the tooth

Your dentist evaluates the remaining tooth, existing restorations, bite and gums. Ask why a crown is recommended for this tooth and whether a more conservative restoration is suitable. A cosmetic preference alone should not replace that examination.

A crown on a natural tooth and a crown attached to a dental implant have different supporting structures. Ask which parts are included in your plan and estimate.

Discuss the material, shade and shape

Planning detailQuestion to ask
MaterialWhy is this material appropriate for this tooth and bite?
ShadeHow will it relate to nearby teeth and existing restorations?
Tooth preparationWhat needs to be changed, and what alternatives exist?
Fit and maintenanceHow will the bite and cleaning access be checked?

Digital scanning and the in-house lab

Sungshim Dental’s in-house lab and digital scanning are part of its restorative workflow. Ask how the tooth information is recorded, how the restoration is designed and when you will review its fit and appearance.

An in-house lab does not mean every crown is completed in one appointment. Confirm whether temporary coverage, additional visits or particular materials are needed for your case.

Thinking about whitening too?

If you are considering whitening and a new visible crown, discuss their sequence before treatment. Crowns do not whiten like natural teeth. A coordinated plan can address when to evaluate natural tooth shade and select the restoration shade.

Explore our in-office and take-home whitening guide and bring your preferences to the consultation.

Follow-up and future care

Ask about sensitivity, bite adjustments, the possibility of repair or replacement and care around the crown margins. Report a loose crown, pain or a bite that feels wrong to the dental team. Do not attempt to glue or adjust a crown yourself.

Bring records if you would like an existing restoration assessed. The condition of the underlying tooth or implant affects which repair options are possible.

Questions patients ask

Can every damaged tooth be treated with a crown?

No. The remaining tooth structure and other clinical findings determine whether a crown is suitable or another approach is needed.

Does your in-house lab guarantee a same-day crown?

No. Timing depends on the clinical situation, material and treatment plan. Ask how many visits are expected.

Can I whiten an existing crown?

Whitening does not lighten a crown the way it lightens natural teeth. Ask your dentist about the cause of the color concern and appropriate options.
