When to seek emergency medical help
Difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe mouth or neck swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding needs immediate medical attention. Call 911 or go to an emergency department. Do not wait for a dental appointment or a reply to an online message.
Tell us what changed
| Concern | Details to report when calling |
|---|---|
| Toothache or pain on biting | When it started, which area hurts, and whether pain is getting worse. |
| Swelling or a bad taste | Any fever, spreading swelling or difficulty opening your mouth. |
| Broken tooth or lost restoration | Whether there was an injury, a sharp edge or exposed tooth structure. |
| Knocked-out adult tooth | When the injury happened. Seek dental help immediately. |
While arranging dental attention
Keep a knocked-out permanent tooth moist, handle it by the crown rather than the root, and seek immediate dental care. Milk can be used to keep it moist while getting help. Do not reinsert a baby tooth. For a cracked tooth, gently rinse with warm water and use a cold compress outside the face. Do not place aspirin against a painful tooth or gum, use sharp tools, or attempt a repair with household glue.
An urgent assessment is the start of the plan
Tell the office about your medications, allergies, recent dental work and any injury. Bring relevant records if available, but do not delay urgent attention to collect them. Ask whether the visit is for assessment, immediate care or both.
The findings determine the next step. Depending on the tooth and surrounding tissues, the discussion may include root canal treatment, restoring a damaged tooth, or gum evaluation. A specific treatment cannot be chosen from symptoms alone.
Availability, costs and follow-up
Ask which appointment is available and what the assessment includes. Same-day treatment and after-hours coverage are not guaranteed. If the office cannot see you promptly, seek another available dental provider; medical warning signs require emergency medical care.
Before leaving an appointment, confirm the next visit, any temporary-care instructions and whom to contact if symptoms worsen. Request an estimate for proposed treatment and ask the office to explain insurance questions for your plan.
