Gum health is more than how your smile looks
Gum disease can have few noticeable symptoms. Bleeding, redness, swelling, receding gums or loose teeth are reasons to seek assessment. A dentist evaluates the gums and the tissues supporting the teeth rather than relying only on whether you feel pain.
Routine cleaning, deep cleaning and maintenance
| Term you may hear | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Routine cleaning | Is this appropriate for the current condition of my gums? |
| Scaling and root planing / deep cleaning | What findings support treatment below the gumline, and which areas need it? |
| Periodontal maintenance | What follow-up schedule is recommended after treatment? |
Treatment is based on the examination. Ask whether nonsurgical care is appropriate and whether more advanced findings require specialist referral. This guide does not promise gum surgery or a specific laser procedure.
Make your consultation useful
- Describe bleeding, tenderness, bad breath or a recent change.
- Bring previous periodontal records if you have them.
- Tell the dentist about medications, tobacco use and health conditions.
- Ask which findings will be recorded and how progress will be assessed.
- Discuss home-care tools you can use comfortably and consistently.
Plan follow-up as part of treatment
Ask when the gums should be reassessed and how the next cleaning interval will be chosen. A treatment plan should make room for review rather than ending with a single cleaning appointment.
Before agreeing to care, ask which areas are included, how visits are divided, what comfort measures are proposed and what the estimate covers. Confirm insurance details with the office and your plan.
Gums, restorations and implants
If you are planning a crown or implant, ask how gum findings affect the sequence of care and cleaning access. For existing implants, our implant maintenance guide provides questions for follow-up visits.
Sudden swelling or significant pain needs timely assessment rather than waiting for a routine cleaning. See the urgent dental concerns guide for how to contact the office and medical warning signs.
Questions patients ask
Is bleeding during brushing something to discuss?
Yes. Report it to your dentist, even if there is little pain, so the cause and appropriate care can be evaluated.
Does everyone need deep cleaning?
No. The recommendation depends on the findings. Ask the dentist to explain why a particular cleaning or treatment is proposed.
How often should I return after gum treatment?
The interval is individualized. Confirm the reassessment date and ongoing maintenance schedule with your dentist.
Gum-health consultations with Dr. Park and Dr. Kim
Dr. Chan Hee Park and Dr. Jisu Kim provide general dental evaluations at Sungshim Dental. If you have bleeding gums, discomfort or concerns about gum health, ask what the examination shows, which care options fit your findings, and when follow-up should occur. A treatment plan depends on your individual oral health.
