Bone Grafting Honolulu

Sungshim Dental · Honolulu, Hawaii

A plan for the bone that will support your new tooth.

If you have been told there is not enough bone for an implant, the next step is an individual evaluation. Bone grafting may be part of a treatment plan, but it is not needed for every patient. At Sungshim Dental in Honolulu, our implant information includes bone grafting, sinus procedures and digital planning.

Why bone matters

An implant needs support in the jaw at a position that also works for the future tooth. Missing teeth, gum disease and previous treatment can affect the available bone. The decision involves both the bone and the shape, bite and cleaning access of the planned restoration.

What your consultation should clarify

01 · Assess

Review your dental and medical history, examine the area and determine which imaging is appropriate.

02 · Plan

Discuss the intended implant position, available bone and whether grafting or another treatment approach is appropriate.

03 · Sequence

Clarify whether procedures can be combined or whether a separate healing stage is needed.

Bone grafting and sinus procedures are different decisions

In the upper back jaw, the sinus and the available bone height may influence the plan. A sinus augmentation procedure can create room for additional bone beneath the sinus membrane. It is not a routine requirement for every upper implant. The examination determines whether it is relevant to your situation.

Our existing implant center explains both crestal and lateral sinus approaches. A consultation is needed to choose an approach; a website example cannot determine which procedure you need.

Digital planning at Sungshim

Our implant center uses CBCT and digital scan information to evaluate implant positions in relation to the planned teeth. The purpose is to connect the surgical plan with the restoration, rather than deciding from a photograph alone. Imaging supports clinical judgment; it does not eliminate surgical risk.

Discuss healing, risks and alternatives

Ask about infection, graft healing, possible additional surgery, and sinus-related risks if a sinus procedure is proposed. Healing time varies with the procedure and your health. Ask whether a bridge, removable replacement or a different implant plan would meet your goals.

  • Why is grafting recommended in this specific area?
  • What material and surgical approach are proposed?
  • What would I wear while the area heals?
  • Does the estimate include grafting and follow-up visits?

At Sungshim Dental · Honolulu

How Sungshim connects bone planning with your future tooth

At our Honolulu office, bone assessment is part of a larger restorative plan. Sungshim Dental uses 3D CBCT and digital oral scans to relate the proposed implant position to the tooth or teeth that will be made. Dr. Jisu Kim brings experience with bone grafting and related implant surgery to this discussion.

See the anatomy

When indicated, CBCT provides a three-dimensional view of the jaw. Ask your dentist to show how available bone and nearby structures affect the proposed implant position.

Plan the restoration

Our in-house lab gives the dentist and technician a direct way to discuss the intended tooth shape and bite while planning the restoration.

Understand the sequence

During your English or Korean consultation, ask which steps are proposed for you: preparation, grafting if needed, implant placement, temporary teeth and the final restoration.

Questions patients ask

Does every dental implant need a bone graft?

No. The need depends on the available bone and the planned implant position. An examination and appropriate imaging guide that decision.

Can grafting and implant placement happen together?

Sometimes. In other cases the graft needs to heal first. Your dentist should explain the reason for the proposed sequence.

How long does treatment take?

There is no single timeline. Ask for a staged plan that includes graft healing when needed, implant healing and restoration appointments.
