When should the first dental visit happen?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth appears or no later than the first birthday. An early visit gives parents a chance to discuss brushing, fluoride, diet, habits and the child’s individual cavity risk.

If your child is older and has not yet visited a dentist, start now without embarrassment. Tell the team the child’s age, symptoms, previous experiences and any accommodations that may help.

Plan your child’s visit with our Honolulu team

Pediatric care at Sungshim Dental is led by Dr. Yong Sok Do. When you call our Kalihi office, tell us your child’s age and the reason for the visit so the team can discuss an appropriate appointment. If a parent also needs dental care, mention both visits when booking; coordinated appointments depend on each clinician’s availability.

Reason for the visit

First checkup, pain, injury, visible change or follow-up.

Health information

Medications, allergies, medical conditions and relevant records.

Comfort and communication

Past dental experiences, anxiety, sensory needs and preferred language.

Prevention, growth and treatment

A pediatric visit may include an age-appropriate examination and a discussion of home care and prevention. Findings determine whether treatment or additional evaluation is needed. Ask what the dentist sees, what can be monitored and what needs attention now.

Parents can also ask about tooth development, bite and habits. A recommendation should be based on the child’s examination rather than a fixed schedule advertised online.

Sedation is an individual clinical decision

Sungshim Dental provides pediatric sedation services with monitoring resources described in our full pediatric guide. Sedation is not automatic and is not suitable for every child or every procedure. Dr. Do evaluates the child, treatment needs, health history and behavior before discussing whether a sedation option is appropriate.

Parents should receive specific fasting, medication, transportation and aftercare instructions for the selected plan. Follow those individual instructions rather than general internet advice. Explore the complete pediatric center guide.

Insurance, estimates and follow-up

Bring insurance information and ask the office to verify participation and benefits for the proposed care. Coverage depends on the plan and is not a guarantee of payment. Ask what is included in the estimate, how many visits may be needed and when the child should return.

If your child has swelling, trauma or significant pain, call the office and describe the symptoms. Review our urgent dental concerns guide; difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe swelling or uncontrolled bleeding requires emergency medical attention.
